LO2: Purpose

The purpose of creating this website for Bradwell Junior School is to make it look more aesthetically pleasing compared to their current one. I am also intending to make my website more easy to navigate with the navigation bar at the top, rather than at the sides.

I am also aiming to inform the parents visiting the site of information about the school, events that may be happening soon, any after school clubs that are going to come up and give parents access to any downloadable letters or information.

LO2: Potential Revenue

There could be ads on display for school related products like uniform, stationary and safety projects like bike safety courses. I would make the advertising space free at the edges of the pages, so as the user is scrolling down, the ads will follow. If the user is not requiring the ads, they can always click off them by closing them. These would have to be strictly regulated though so that no other form of promotion or advert could appear on the site. Per 1000 website views the site could earn up to $0.10 to $10.00 CPM from ad revenue. As the website was created for free on wix.com, there are no hosting prices.

LO2: Launch Date

I am planning to launch my website on Friday 6th May, after all the information had been gathered, pictures have been taken and these are posted to the website.

I plan to get users to feedback on my website by sending them test plans to complete of how certain parts of the site perform and work. I will receive 5 of these forms back from 5 different people and analyse how they found it and will make any changes if necessary.

LO2: Legal and Ethical

Copyright Issues:

The website will have no copyright issues in terms of assets or information as the content has all been written by the school themselves or the government will have supplied information, which is mandatory to be put onto the site.

Asset List:

- Pictures of the school (outside and inside) and of the surrounding areas.
- Information that the school are wanting to be included on the pages, (newsletters, catchment area, what's going on).
- Logo of the school.
- Events/School calendar.
- Message from the head teacher on the home page.
- Contact information.
- Policies e.g. Uniform and behaviour.
- Slogan.
- Photos of things that happened in the school.
- Performance table and results.
- List of local things to do that could help with school work like the library.

Data Protection Act:

The data protection act makes sure that personal information is used appropriately by businesses, organisations and the government.

In terms of my website, I will make sure that I responsibly use data so that I am not breaking this act. The data that I have to use will have to be...
  • used fairly and lawfully
  • used for limited, specifically stated purposes
  • used in a way that is adequate, relevant and not excessive
  • accurate
  • kept for no longer than is absolutely necessary
  • handled according to people’s data protection rights
  • kept safe and secure
  • not transferred outside the European Economic Area without adequate protection

The things that I could have to be aware in my data of are...
  • ethnic background
  • political opinions
  • religious beliefs
  • health
  • sexual health
  • criminal records

I will not be needing to consider some of these points as they don't fall into my category of website, but others like health I could have to consider as there could be information on vaccinations that could be happening in the school for the children.

There will be some issues if people with disabilities would be using my website. If I were to make any changes to accommodate this, I would make the writing a lot bigger in a separate version of the website for people with reading difficulties, for blind people wherever the mouse hovered over, it would make a sound of what was there, e.g. if the mouse was hovering over the head teachers introduction on the home page, a voice could say "Head teachers introduction, right click to read", then the user could right click and the paragraph would be read out loud for them.

There was a new cookie law introduced in 2014. The new law means that websites now need to get consent from visitors to store or retrieve any information on a PC, smartphone or tablet. If I were to use cookies on my website I would have to have a pop up asking for users permission to use them.

LO2: Content

Content:

This is my mood board for the kind of things that could be included on the website. I have used things that could be related to the information page, gallery page, news page and the about us page.

This is my wireframe for the home page of the website I am creating for Bradwell Junior School. The parents/visitors will navigate the webpage by clicking on the embedded links in the boxes on the left hand side of the page. This is easy to identify straight away and for the users it shouldn't be a problem to find what they're looking for with ease. The information flows from the top to the bottom of the page.

The mind map of all of what I could include on my website.

LO1: Analysis of amazon.co.uk

b) Visitor Needs: The visitor needs from the Amazon website is to search for any product that they might need to buy or download. The visitors could also want to look up more information about Amazon's products such as the Kindle or the fire TV stick.

c) Information Flow/User Experience: On the Amazon website, there is a big, long search bar at the top of the web page. This is generally what users would use to search for products they want to purchase. There is a list of popular departments that users can click on for easy access to a category of products.

d) Features: Amazon's website https://www.amazon.com/ has the same problem as Gumtree's website, there are very limited features. The only real options are to search for products and to buy them. There are some other minor options but they all relate to Amazon in some way, for example the Amazon Prime adverts, Kindle adverts and all the fulfilments from the company.

e) Benefits: The benefits of the Amazon website are that the users are able to search for any products that they are in need of in an instant. It is very convent as it saves going out to buy products when you can have a bigger variety on this website.

f) Content: The worldwide Amazon website (https://www.amazon.com/) has content to satisfy all users that visit either just to browse or to make a purchase. You can search for your specific needs in the search bar, there are images displaying the products that are made by Amazon such as the Kindle and Prime and sponsored pages. There are also opportunities on the website such as jobs and careers that are available from Amazon.

LO1: Analysis of gumtree.com

b) Visitor Needs:  The visitor needs from the Gumtree website is to access a range of advertisements like motors, everyday items, property, jobs, services and pets. The visitor would then like to make a purchase from the website or to download some more information about vacancies and jobs.

c) Information Flow/User Experience: On the Gumtree website, there is a variety of different adverts available to browse through straight away on the home page. There is a clear navigation bar just below the search bar which allows users to go to the part of the website they are there for. The search bar also allows them to search for specific items they might be interested in.

d) Features: Gumtree's website https://www.gumtree.com/ is limited in its features as there is really only one or two purposes to its website. Users can list their items for sale using the 'Post an Ad' option or users can search for items to buy from the search bar at the top. Even though the features are very basic, the website serves its purpose and provides all the necessary needs for the user to carry out the selling
process.

e) Benefits: The benefits of the Gumtree website is that users can post free, classified adverts to the website to sell or advertise their goods/jobs. The users can also search for any items that they would like to purchase by using the search bar. This makes it a lot easier to find what you're looking for.

f) Content: The content on the Gumtree website (https://www.gumtree.com/) is a search bar to search for items that a customer would be looking to purchase, there are some recommended items to have a look at, favourite items, saved searches, a page for motors and vehicle parts, everyday items, property, jobs, services, community classes in local areas and a page for pets (lots, found and looking for homes).

LO1: Analysis of nike.com

b) Visitor Needs:  The visitor needs from the Nike website is to investigate products such as hoodies, trainers and t-shirts to purchase. Visitors may also want to customise their own trainers, they can do this on the customise section of the site.

c) Information Flow/User Experience: On the Nike website, the information is laid out in a very aesthetically pleasing way. The fonts are very easy to read as they are in bold and a sans serif type. The images relate to the category of website and the products that are available to buy and customise.

d) Features: Nike's website http://www.nike.com/ gives users unrestricted access to its features. Users can search for their favourite products, sign up for an email newsletter, find out about returns, careers or payment options. Users can even customise their own trainers to suit their specific requirements, this feature is one of Nike's most popular and biggest selling points as it gives users the freedom to feel like a designer and they don't even have to buy the product, they can just use it for fun.

e) Benefits: The benefits of the Nike website is that the users can customise their own trainers of any of their designs and models, changing the design, colour, ID and size of the shoes. The users can also search for all their training needs for a variety of sports such as basketball, football and running.

f) Content: The Nike UK website (http://www.nike.com/) has an amazing array of content. However it is unclear from the front page how to navigate through the content on the site, but once the mouse is scrolled over the navigation bar at the top, many options are displayed for each category; Men, Women, Boys, Girls and Customise. Each category is specifically designed to suit the gender. Some of these specific sections include sports such as Tennis, Football and Basketball, leisure activities such as Running, Gym & Training and Skateboarding. These categories then split off into the clothing and footwear that is appropriate to these sports/activities.

LO1: Analysis of yahoo.com

b) Visitor Needs:  When going onto the Yahoo website, the needs for the visitors is to read up on the news that's more gossip rather than the main news stories. The kind of stories that appear on this website are generally easier to read and are less intellectual compared to the BBC's.

c) Information Flow/User Experience: On the Yahoo website, the information is layer out in a very confusing manner. There are titles, video links, blog links and images stuck all over the home page. The only thing to guide you is a navigation bar at the side of the page, which helps re-direct you to the different parts of the site like mail and sports.

d) Features: Yahoo's website https://uk.yahoo.com/ does have lots of features. However, these features are not very well presented on the website. There are certainly more genres of information on Yahoo compared with its competitiors like the BBC. The celebrity pages give it a unique advantage and makes the website appealing to a more younger audience with articles on bands like One Direction.

e) Benefits: The benefits of the Yahoo website is that the users can access a range of news stories from a variety of categories. These news stories are involve ones you wouldn't expect to see on sites such as the BBC's or The Guardian's.

f) Content: The content of the UK Yahoo website (https://uk.yahoo.com/) is mainly news and information with links to different websites tailored to your tastes or browsing history. On the front page you are greeted with current news stories. However there are separate parts of Yahoo that are on a navigation bar on the left hand side of the page. These include Yahoo Mail, Sport, Finance and Celebrity.
